Getting Lost in Pioneertown

Location overview

Pioneer Town is located northwest of Yucca Valley, on the way to Joshua Tree Park. Started in 1946 by actor, Dick Curtis, the plan was to create a live-in movie set. Unfortunately, hard times hit Pioneertown and by 2006 Pioneertown had a population of only 350 people. Mane Street Pioneertown is still open to the public free of charge. There's also a post office, Pappy & Harriet's Bar, and few artisan shops. Photo wise, we shot further down from Mane Street, away from the public. We were't bothered and locals waved at as while we were shooting. KEEP IN MIND there is a lack of cellphone reception. Our team was separated for a little bit. Not knowing the area we didn't have a meetup spot. Suggestion, meet at Pappy's & Harriet's bar, then walk over into Pioneertown.

Rachel- Photographer

"A fun spot! I loved that we weren't bothered at all. There's a variety of buildings to pick from. For a Sunday, it was busier later in the day. Pappy's bar attracts a lot of people. You may want to shoot down by the post office to avoid crowds."

Sophia- Model

"It was a cozy, fun town to visit for our shoot during the summer. Stay away from the dry shrubbery! There are these prickly little stars that like to stick to the wardrobe, and they hurt! You have been warned. Depending where you go, there are a lot of different kinds of ants on the ground, so wear closed shoes, if possible. It’s best to model there late afternoon since the sun can be pretty harsh there during the summer. Other than that, modeling at Pioneer Town was a breeze."

Ingrid- Hairstylist

"Hot as hell! It's sandy and dirty. I suggested doing hair before you travel to the location."

Irene- Make-Up Artist

"No cellphone signal. Agree on a meeting spot."
