Feeling free at Salvation Mountain

Location overview

Salvation Mountain is located 1 mile from Slab City, California. It is about a 1 hour away from Palm Springs, if you speed along the highway. It was created by a local artist, Leonard Knight. He focused the mountains artwork around the sinners prayer. Sadly, he passed away in 2014 but his vision lives on. The structure is made out of straw, adobe, tires, and wood beams. It is an amazing and breath-taking structure.

What we discovered: No heels!! The heels crack the structure and most importantly, it's uneven; you will fall. We're not sure if it was the day we shot but it was WINDY! Stick to the yellow road. The structure is fragile and if you don't remain on the yellow road, it can collapse underneath you. No partial or full nudity allowed!

Please donate. We forgot but this structure is solely kept up by volunteers and donations.

Rachel- Photographer

"Be alert! This place was my dream place to shoot. I loved every minute and felt at ease. Please be considerate of others. Salvation Mountain receives a lot of visitors and sometimes photoshoots can get in the way. If you see someone wants to go where you're shooting, let them pass. The mountain can be tricky to shoot on. Stay on the yellow road for your own safety. Also be aware of the weather. It can be REALLY windy or SUPER hot. Choose outfits accordingly. Flowy dresses and skirts may not be the best for this location."

Jessica- Model

"A great place to shoot, colorful and many places to hide away from the severe winds. Quite dusty and no high heels, but an overall pleasant experience."

Ingrid- Hairstylist

"Windy! Bad for hair. Other than that, for hair-styling I suggest bright colors, festival looks, or street pop style."

Irene-Make-Up Artist

"Do make-up in the car or beforehand. Too windy and hot to do at the location. Make-up ideas: bright, dramatic, or colorful to match the location."
